Created by Professor Aubrey Fleming, the famed ornithologist, this device was based upon mathematical principles set out by Professor James Moriarty. The central concept of Moriarty's treatise was that all language and grammar could be reduced to mathematical expression and that through algebraic principles and formula, any language could be translated through this root mathematics. Driven by his passion for birdsong Aubrey Fleming expanded and applied this little known theory managing to unravel its complexities until he had constructed a device capable of translating the basic musical tonal system of birdsong, with its various expressions into rudimentary language and vice versa.
Not realising that he had created the prototype of the ultimate cryptogrammatical engine, he published his findings and alerted others to its potential. Various nations sent their secret agents to retrieve the device and its creator. Both had already been appropriated by Unseelie forces backed by the power of the Steamlords. Seeking to eliminate the liberal and reforming elements within the British Monarchy and Parliament, they had used the device to translate the ritual to summon the Wild Hunt into musical arrangement. This was then disseminated as a lost movement to the Vivladi's Four Seasons, the so called "5th Season" or Samhain movement. The first performance was to be to the assembled nobility of England, who would fall victim to the Wild Hunt, but this was foiled due to the actions of a brave group of heroes.
The device itself had been set up as a backup plan with modifications that allowed it to broadcast its own translations, and to stop it from completing the summoning the heroes destroyed it.
Professor Fleming was rescued but has since disappeared. Rumours suggest that he was last seen accompanying a texan.
